At Figaro Photography, my goal is to make your headshot experience simple, comfortable, and stress-free. Here are ten tips to help you walk into your session feeling confident and prepared.

1. Wear Your Glasses If They're Part of You

If people know you with your glasses, wear them! Your headshot should represent the version of yourself that your clients, coworkers, and community recognize. If you wear contacts sometimes and glasses other times, bring both so we can capture a variety of looks.

2. Blazer or No Blazer?

There isn't one right answer.

Think about your profession and your personal brand. If you regularly meet clients in a blazer, it may be the perfect choice. If your work is more creative or casual, a blazer may not fit your brand at all. Your headshot should feel authentic to who you are.

3. Bring One Extra Clothing Option

For quick headshot sessions, you don't need an entire wardrobe.

Bring one extra shirt, blouse, jacket, or blazer. Sometimes an outfit looks different on camera than it does in the mirror. Having one backup option gives us flexibility if you decide you'd like a different look.

For full branding sessions, multiple outfits are always encouraged.

4. Keep Your Makeup True to You

You don't need to completely change your appearance for professional photos.

If you normally wear little makeup, keep it natural. If you wear makeup every day, stick with your everyday routine. If full glam is your signature look, embrace it. Your headshot should look like you—just polished and confident.

5. You Don't Need to Know How to Pose

One of the biggest misconceptions is that clients need to know what they're doing before they arrive.

You don't.

I'll guide you through posing, body angles, facial expressions, and where to look throughout your session. Your only job is to show up.

6. You Don't Have to Smile

Every headshot doesn't require a big smile.

Depending on your profession and your goals, we may capture several different expressions—from warm and approachable to confident and serious. We'll choose the expressions that best fit your personality and your brand.

7. Facial Hair Matters

If you have facial hair, plan to trim and shape it a day or two before your session.

If you're clean-shaven, shave according to your normal routine. Avoid trying a completely new beard style or grooming routine right before your appointment. Your headshot should still look like you.

8. Steam or Iron Your Clothes

Wrinkles are much more noticeable in professional photographs than most people realize.

Take a few minutes before your session to steam or iron your clothing. It's a simple step that helps your headshots look polished and professional.

9. Keep Accessories Simple

Accessories should enhance your look—not distract from it.

Simple jewelry and classic accessories often photograph beautifully. If you're unsure whether to wear something, bring it with you. We can always photograph both options.

10. Don't Wait for the "Perfect Time"

If you've been putting off professional headshots until you lose weight, grow your hair out, or life becomes less busy, consider this your reminder to stop waiting.
